Andria’s Story
Here is the one thing I know after surviving three losses before age ten: I have been a child in that moment three times. My mother died when I was 11 months old. My grandmother and caregiver died when I was 9 — I had been sleeping beside her every night through her cancer until she took her last breath. And when I was 10 years old, my uncle screamed my name from a block away and told me to bring the house keys. I ran to a morgue and found my father under a white sheet.
Nobody sat me down. Nobody gave me the words. Nobody told me what I was feeling had a name.
I built everything in this guide from inside my first experience and the one I had to shape over the years — because I know what a child needs to hear, and I know what silence costs them when they don't get it.
